Never A Dull Moment at Mandrell Show
by Mitch Moore
It's been almost six years since I first saw Louise Mandrell perform at her Pigeon Forge music theater. I still remember that show, particularly how the minutes seemed to fly by as Louise and her cast unleashed two hours' worth of song, dance and variety that set a new benchmark for entertainment in the Smokies. I've since lost count of how many times I've seen Louise perform over the years. But as I darken the theater door to catch her show for 2004, my sense of anticipation is cranked up a few notches. From the opening number-in which Louise sails in on a star with her name blazing in lights across the curtain-to the dizzying and spectacular finale, this real-life star draws you into her world and plays the ever-accommodating host as you sit back and marvel at what unfolds on stage. Louise delivers more than two dozen new songs that reflect the singer's incredible range of musical interests and abilities. Few performers are able to sing country, Latin, reggae, gospel, jazz, polka, rock, patriotic, blues and swing music all in one show, much less do all the styles justice. But when it comes to versatility, Louise Mandrell is truly a law-abiding citizen. Anyone who has ever seen her show knows that singing is just the tip of the iceberg for Louise. She is practically a one-woman band, playing everything from fiddle to drums to bass, and even the Tazmanian Devil would have his work cut out for him trying to keep up with her dance routines. And while Louise Mandrell has enough talent to be the whole package, she never fails to let her supporting cast of vocalists, dancers and musicians shine along with her. Several different segments of Louise's show manage to stand out in my mind. The Mardis Gras scene just before intermission is a veritable color explosion, showcasing dazzling new sets and lighting effects. Performers in multihued, sequined costumes make the stage sparkle, inflatable jesters spring to life, and Louise wraps up the act by flying out over the audience on gossamer wings. The second act starts strongly with a well-rounded gospel section that includes something for all tastes-from old-fashioned, hand-clapping, foot-stomping spirituals to harmonious, meditative ensemble pieces featuring flute, trumpet and violin. Throughout, Louise and her gospel choir are perfectly in synch with their rich harmonies. A star-spangled tribute to America honors not just our country's military veterans but its firefighting and law enforcement heroes. The hard-driving number "I Need A Hero" brings a misty-eyed audience to its feet and segues into a stirring re-creation of the flag-raising scene at Ground Zero. The show makes its last lap with a wide-open throttle as Louise and cast turn the theater into a party zone. A final flurry of high-energy songs and dance numbers culminate with a shower of balloons and confetti that rains down on the audience. As I exit the theater, I look at my watch, shake my head and once again wonder where the time has gone. This show was vintage Louise Mandrell- and there was never a dull moment.

The Sevier County Heritage Museum opened July 10, 1995, as part of Sevierville's Bicentennial Celebration. The U. S. Postal Service sold the former Sevierville Post Office building to the county, which in turn designated the building as the site for a new musem. SCHM was co-founded by Janie Hearn and Patsy Bradford, who received recognition from Gov. Don Sundquist for their efforts to preserve Sevier County's rich heritage. This museum is sponsored in part by a grant from Tennessee 200, Inc., in honor of Tennessee's Bicentennial. The museum is also a tribute to the memory of the late Rowena Emert Schmutzer, who devoted much of her time to preservation of Sevier County's history. The Museum offers much more than displays of local artifacts and memorabilia. We host lectures and classes; we transcribe and index historic documents; and we perform research services for long-distance genealogists and historians. The Museum also takes part in local commemmorations of historic events and supports a number of other like-minded organizations, such as the Smoky Mountain Historical Society and the Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains.
