A Brief History of Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge owes its name to the Little Pigeon River that flows through it, and a prominent iron forge established by Isaac Love in 1820. For much of its history, it was a quiet, agricultural community nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, centered around the historic Old Mill.
Like neighboring Gatlinburg, the dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the 1930s slowly began to shift the local economy. However, it was the opening of Silver Dollar City (now Dollywood) in the 1960s that truly sparked the town's evolution.
Today, Pigeon Forge has grown into one of the most popular family vacation destinations in the Southeast. It seamlessly blends its historic roots, still visible at the Old Mill, with a bustling Parkway filled with dynamic attractions, theaters, and massive entertainment complexes.
