Discover Our Roots

A Brief History of Townsend

Long before it became known as the Peaceful Side of the Smokies, the area was called Tuckaleechee Cove, home to Cherokee Native Americans for centuries. In the early 1900s, the landscape changed dramatically when W.B. Townsend established the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company, bringing a logging boom to the region.

As logging operations ceased with the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the 1930s, the town dismantled its rail lines and transitioned from a bustling lumber camp into a quiet, scenic gateway.

Today, Townsend carefully preserves its rich Appalachian heritage. Through landmarks like the Little River Railroad Museum and the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, it offers visitors a tranquil escape from the busier tourist hubs while celebrating its profound connection to the surrounding wilderness.
